Fantastic For What
Did you see the FANTASTIC FOUR trailer? And when you did, did you know it was the FANTASTIC FOUR? I’ve never been a huge Fantastic Four reader, basically having read only the Hickman run. It was a great run, yet small in comparison to the history behind the book. So what I have to say doesn’t come via a sense of love for the book. As a trailer, regardless of property, it was boring. My expectation for the movie isn’t lowered. My expectation for the marketing of the movie has been greatly lowered.
FANTASTIC FOUR seems to suffer from e-hate (or maybe that should be iHate). Any rumor leak drips into the gaping internet maw to turn into the indigestion of a 1000 fan boys all screaming out in pain. Changes to the revered canon comes under scrutiny. A tradition as old as fandom. And yet, instead of taking a swing at the collected faces of fanboys, Fox put it’s tail between it’s legs, popped a squat and shat out this trailer. (Maybe even maintaining that strange, guilty “What, me?” eye contact the whole time too.
Here was Fox’s chance to come out swinging and say to nerd-nation, “Guess what? All that BS you simpering Simpsons suckers have been seething over about this movie? Well it’s all for naught. This movie is the shit’s tits and we’re here to prove it to you!” Let’s face it, Fanboys can be turned at the drop of a…well of a trailer. They’ll go from “Whedon will ruin Avengers” to “Whedon is the one true God” when the final images, in trailer or movie form, are revealed.
Everything about this trailer is non-committal. Now you may be saying what I’ve heard many say, “This is only a teaser trailer!” True. But honestly, do you remember anything from the trailer? Anything from the canned speech? Any of the character costumes? Do you recall any major set pieces that couldn’t be from somewhere else? My hope is someone will take the time to make this trailer out of images from the 1990 FANTASTIC FOUR.
Maybe it’s cruel to pick on FANTASTIC FOUR. Like being a guest on Kimmel and picking on Matt Damon. When the FF comes out, I’ll likely see it. But right now, judging just by this trailer, which is totally fair as Fox has said this is the cover to judge us by, I may not see it until it’s out on video. Unless of course the next trailer is fantastic.
See you next week!
